We Won! County Backs Down from Job Cuts

I want to let you know that your calls to your county commissioners, your help to spread the word of our important work online and, most importantly, showing up to meetings when possible, made the difference. If you were there or watched on TV, you saw Local 199 members out in support of their coworkers, who were there, in their uniforms, to testify about the importance of the work they do.

When the Miami-Dade commissioners narrowly passed a $14.3 billion budget for 2027, it did not include cutting up to nine jobs of AFSCME Local 199 members. Members supported the Local’s leadership in lobbying EVERY SINGLE commissioner to get the funding restored…and we were ready with our backup plans to ensure workers would have found positions within the county at the same compensation or higher.

I cannot stress how big of a win this is. We stayed united and strong and made clear we were not going say that if it was only a few jobs, that would be ok. No! Cutting even one just was not acceptable. Yes, we planned and were ready for whatever came at us, but we never lost sight of the #1 goal – no jobs lost!
