We are fighting back on proposed job cuts!

AFSCME Local 199 has just been advised of layoffs of 6 of our coworkers in the Illegal Dumping Division, which is part of the Department of Solid Waste Management Waste Enforcement Officers. 

We are not only furious at this move but also completely in disbelief that during a time like this, the County would make such a devastating move that would devastate the livelihoods of these families.

Let me be clear - we will not stand for our members to be laid off without a fight!

We have already started contacting Commissioners and requesting the salaries and fringe benefits of senior staff within the Solid Waste Department. Rather than eliminating the people that provide the actual services our county relies on and deserves, they need to find their savings within the salaries of those at the top.

Balancing the budget on the backs those who keep our neighborhoods safe and clear from the environmental, health and economic impacts of illegal dumping is not the answer!

We will not allow any department in this county to fix budget shortfalls or paper over budgets mismanagement through short-sighted solutions like layoffs.

Our union is committed to showing up in strength at the budget hearing tomorrow. We will be making clear that this is not something we are going to swallow and move on. We are going to speak up for every single one of our members and their jobs.

We need every member to speak up now and contact their Miami-Dade Commissioner or attend the hearing in person if you can.
