Meet Frances Gillum, mother of AFSCME Florida's endorsed candidate for Governor of Florida, Andrew Gillum, and card carrying member of AFSCME Retirees of Florida. Frances was the guest speaker this week at the AFSCME Retiree Chapter 43 meeting in Tallahassee. A hard working union bus driver for many years, Mrs. Gillum shared that she instilled that same work ethic and respect for the dignity of labor in her son from an early age. AFSCME Florida is excited to support Mayor GIllum in this election because he has shown time and again that he understands the issues that matter most to hard working families in Florida: Good jobs, Health Care, Education, and the Environment.
The last eight years has been a disater for Florida workers under Rick Scott. Jana Weaver, AFSCME Florida's Executive Director has rated Scott a "Near Zero" on a scale of one to ten. Mayor Gillum knows this all too well. "State workers have to fight tooth and nail for every pay increase," he recently told the Tallahassee Democrat. "When I'm Governor, State workers and organized labor will have a seat at the table, instead of being on the menu."
Our members will be knocking doors and phonebanking for the next five weeks to Get Out The Vote for Andrew Gillum. We want to thank Frances Gillum for raising a great leader. All of us at AFSCME Florida look forward to a new era of leadership in the Sunshine State.
