Manatee County School Board Workers Win Historic Contract

AFSCME Local 1584, the union that represents bus drivers, custodians, food service workers, and other support staff at the Manatee County School district, ratified a historic agreement Saturday which provides substantial raises for all employees and significant improvements in working conditions.
The contract, which was approved by nearly 90% of workers that voted Saturday at the Palmetto Youth Center includes:

• Raises for all employees in the bargaining unit retroactive to July 1 of 2018.

• Attendance bonus distribution will increase from semi-annually to quaterly.

• Food Service workers will now see step pay match the years of service they have on the job.

• The employer and union agreed on contract language to improve communication between parties and make sure employees are well informed of union benefits upon hiring and at all back to school conferences.
"This was my first contract negotiation and it was a horrowing experience at times but well worth it. " said Bob Story, an electrician and Exectutive Board member with Local 1584. "I encourage all employees to get involved with their union and see the reality of how negotiations actually work."

“This year’s negotiations were arduous at times but ultimately, our concerns were addressed and steps taken to improve our environment," said Local 1584 Vice-President Alfreda Mitchell. “Our Union is growing in strength and numbers and we are looking forward to a bright future with Manatee County Schools.”
